The Detroit chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers (AAZK) invites bowlers to help save rhinoceroses one pin at a time at Lanes for Lewa. Bowlers may register individually or form teams of four or five for the event, which features bowling, a silent auction and children’s games and crafts. The $25 registration fee for adults includes shoe rental, bowling, pizza, soft drinks and a $15 donation. The registration fee is $20 for children ages 12 and younger. Participants who raise $50 or more will receive a Lanes for Lewa T-shirt.

The Detroit chapter of AAZK – a nonprofit volunteer organization made up of zookeepers and others dedicated to professional animal care and wildlife conservation – has been supporting the conservation of rhinos and their natural habitats since 1990 and has raised more than $220,000 through its annual bowl-a-thon campaign. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the June 16 event will directly benefit the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
Rhinoceros populations have decreased worldwide due to habitat destruction and urbanization as well as illegal poaching for their horns. The Detroit Zoo is home to two male southern white rhinos, Jasiri, 18, and Tamba, 17.
