Archive: Chalk Creatures Come to Life at Detroit Zoo
July 21, 2016
ROYAL OAK, Mich.,
Many Detroit Zoo guests will be looking down during an upcoming visit, but not to play Pokémon GO on their smartphones. Street artist and illustrator David Zinn will create playful 3-D animal drawings composed entirely of chalk on the pavement at three Zoo locations from noon to 8 p.m. on July 27 and August 10.
Guests will have the opportunity to view Zinn in action as he draws inspiration from his wild surroundings to create the images. He will begin whipping up his whimsical works of art near the Polk Penguin Conservation Center, and will also stage near Rackham Fountain and the Cotton Family Wolf Wilderness throughout the day.
“This will be a unique and wonderful opportunity for guests to enjoy David Zinn’s charming creatures as they pop out of the pavement and come to life throughout the Zoo,” said Detroit Zoological Society Executive Director and CEO Ron Kagan.
Zinn’s visits coincide with the Detroit Zoo’s Wild Summer Nights concert series on Wednesdays in July and August. Michigan Opera Theatre will perform on July 27, and pop cover band Cosmic Groove will take the stage on August 10. Wild Summer Nights is free with Zoo admission, which is $6 after 6 p.m., or free for members. The Zoo remains open until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays through August 31.
