The Detroit Zoo will reopen two more facilities to the public. The Barn and Holden Reptile Conservation Center (HRCC) will reopen Friday, May 14.

The Barn is home to two former racehorses, Trio and Buster, who were rescued by the Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses (CANTER). A Belted Galloway steer, sheep, domestic yak, miniature donkeys, hens and pigs also roam the habitat.

The Holden Reptile Conservation Center is home to 131 reptiles representing 61 species, of which approximately 52 percent are considered threatened or endangered in the wild. This will be visitors’ first opportunity to see water monitor Solair in his new habitat.

The Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) expanded Solair’s habitat to nearly five times its original size. Solair’s renovated space provides a more naturalistic and enriching experience including a waterfall and added hot rocks.

“This is part of a conscious, ongoing commitment to our animals. Much like the grizzly bear, Australian Outback Adventure and Rhino habitats – we’re consistently looking for ways to turn multiple habitats into one and improve the quality of life for those who call the Zoo home,” said Scott Carter, chief life sciences officer for the DZS.

The Matilda R. Wilson Free-Flight Aviary, Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Habitat and National Amphibian Conservation Center indoor areas continue to remain open to the public as well. All outdoor habitats are visible from walkways.
