Amur tiger
Panthera tigris altaica
At the Detroit Zoo
Two Amur tigers can be seen prowling and playing in the Devereaux Tiger Forest. Nikolai (Russian for “victorious”) was born in 2017. Ameliya joined the habitat in 2021. These big cats can be found across from the red pandas in their spacious habitat, which features naturalistic elements important to tigers, including elevated vantage points, open spaces, wooded areas, pools, a waterfall and a “catnap” cave.
Description
Amur tigers are the largest members of the cat family and the largest of the five remaining subspecies of tigers. They are mostly orange with black stripes. They have white markings on their ears, abdomens, paws, muzzles, cheeks and above their eyes. Large teeth and sharp claws make them deadly hunters.
