Zoo Animals
The Detroit Zoo is home to animals from A to Z, including anteaters and zebras and hundreds of other species in between. More than 2,000 animals representing more than 200 species of amphibians, mammals, birds and reptiles live in the Zoo’s 125-acres of true-to-life habitats that bring visitors face-to-face with these exotic creatures.

Wildlife Conservation
The Detroit Zoological Society’s mission of Celebrating and Saving Wildlife extends far beyond our front gates. We participate in dozens of cooperative national and local programs to ensure the long-term survival of animal populations, including the Great Lakes piping plover, eastern massasauga rattlesnake, Wyoming toads, Puerto Rican crested toads, snow leopards, polar bears and zebras.
Center for Zoo and Aquarium Animal Welfare and Ethics
As the home of the Center for Zoo Animal Welfare, the Detroit Zoological Society is a leader in the care and treatment of animals in captivity, developing best practices to meet their physical and social needs. CZAW is a resource center for captive animal welfare knowledge; a convener and forum for exotic animal welfare science, practice and policy discussions; and a center conducting research and training, and recognizing advances in exotic animal welfare.
